Merchants of record are responsible for international tax collection and remittance. If you want to pay local and wherever that merchant of record is based taxes only and simplify things for you, they are how to do it. As I understand it they also like have nexus for you and therefore you only pay local and merchant of record location taxes and only have to register in those places if you have to register.
